I’ve noticed a little traffic recently about GMail support for IMAP and to be honest was feeling a little left out when the option didn’t appear in my gmail settings.
After spending a little time looking at this tonight and finding that my wife’s gmail account DID have IMAP available, I found out why. It all has to do with the language settings.
The first option under settings in Gmail is the language setting and being in Australia I of course set my language to English (UK). I changed this …

Through a facebook post I managed to get an invite to a service called tripit.com which is still in beta.
There are many services out there that will let you organise your travel with an itinerary. What I specifically like about this though is the ‘email it in’ function.
Here’s how it works:
Book your travel on the travel website, like orbitz or hotel.com or whatever
Wait for the email confirmation
Forward it to a generic tripit.com email address
That’s it! The result is that the tripit.com engine parses the email, finds out who it came …

Great article that shows how to use some simple techniques to do in-cell graphing in Excel. I find this a really simple way to align data with a graphical presentation of such, sometime it’s just too hard to get the data to align with the information you are graphing when using a true Excel chart. This appears to be a great little work around.
It uses a REPT function in Excel that I didn’t even know existed. The purpose of this function is to repeat a string a certain number of times. The function accepts 2 parameters…
=REPT(string to …

Here is a nice document which popped up in my reader today about Facebook, a social network. If the whole social network concept is new then here are a few steps you can follow to get up and running. Facebook appears to have some of the largest growth in this environment right now, so if you had to pick one, I would pick this.

Those who know me know that I have to have a new toy to play with most of the time, and right now it’s my new Microsoft mouse.
I bought this mouse 2 weeks ago and have now had the opportunity to have a good play with it. First off, I love the fact that it is Bluetooth. I’m really starting to rely on this more and more now as a connection medium for devices and get annoyed when it doesn’t work (which is rare). I have Bluetooth built into my dell …

I’m writing this post using something called Windows Live Writer. This is one of many new services offered by Microsoft under the new windows live platform.
There’s a nice post here that talks about the services available. But it begs the question of whether Microsoft if catching up on all this web2.0 stuff.
Above is a screen cap of the windows live writer application. At first I was confused in that I had to actually download this application. How weird? Then I thought “how weird that I thought downloading something was weird”. …

There is a side to this story I haven’t seen much about, and that is “why can’t microsoft lock down their own search”?
The way I see it is that search really is an integral part of the operating system, in the same way that file management (like being able to save a document) is part of the file system. By saving a file on my computer I am using the functionality of the OS to manage the location and indexing of the file on the disk. Similarly when I go …

Just an odd little JPG I came across the other day, nothing special, but for some reason it struck a chord with me and laughed about it for a few minutes.

Stumbled across an interesting read, written almost in the style of a manifesto. The author proposed that Web 2.0 is dead, however I think he/she missed the mark on describing what web 2.0 is all about.
The description given talks about w2.0 as a toolset, and summarises by saying that w2.0 = simplification. This is far from the reality in my view. W2.0 to me is more of a philosophy than a toolset. I think the trend he is seeing is design that is evident in many sites that like to …

This has to be one of the most useful programs I’ve used in years, maybe most useful.
As a part time web developer I rarely get the time to learn the ‘right’ way to do things, so I end up giving a go and then fine tuning what doesn’t work. To that end this tool enabled me to see where I went wrong in my HTML, javascript or CSS.
There are so many features in this product, but there are only a few that I use regularly:
Firstly it’s a Firefox extension
If something …
