Is Microsoft Catching Up?

Posted on July 31st, 2007 in Blogging, Just Cool, Software, Tools, Web by Jay

I’m writing this post using something called Windows Live Writer.  This is one of many new services offered by Microsoft under the new windows live platform.

There’s a nice post here that talks about the services available. But it begs the question of whether Microsoft if catching up on all this web2.0 stuff.

WriterScreenCap

Above is a screen cap of the windows live writer application.  At first I was confused in that I had to actually download this application.  How weird? Then I thought “how weird that I thought downloading something was weird”.  I guess I’m just so used to working with online applications that the concept of having to download an application to make a blog posting seemed foreign to me.  But having downloaded it I kinda see where Microsoft is heading.

This represents one of a series of tools that you can plug into other applications or use independently.  I must say that I’m actually really impressed with this writer, it has a ‘Save draft offline’ function which is nice, and when I first used it it walked me through a simple wizard where it connected to my blog and found out what sort of blog it was (wordpress in my case) and then actually showed me the editing window using the CSS of my blog.  Cool!

There a bunch of ‘insert’ functions to the right that I guess will enable me to add more plugins to the posting, here’s a map as an example:

I guess in general I have seen a few things Microsoft have done recently that show me that they are finally catching on to some of these concepts, it’s a shame that it seems to take so long to get these things up and running however.

More to come on this topic.

UPDATE: You know Microsoft is changing when they build and publish a ‘Blog This’ add in for Firefox.

New Theme

Posted on January 12th, 2007 in Blogging, Interface, Websites by Jay

Have been searching high and low for a new theme for quite some time and finally found what I was looking for.

This theme has sidebar widgets capability which is great plus i love the “content front and centre” approach.

While doing this addition I decided to add a plug to manage threaded comments, so check that out.  Finally am working on putting in LightBox or something similar for image management.

Your comments welcome.

A Place for Blogs in Business

Posted on November 8th, 2006 in Blogging by Jay

Have been racking my brain to think of ways to bring a blog into the business world, and more than just another way to promote brand awareness or push your latest product.

I recently saw a ‘one-liner’ on a wiki that was put together for an unconference happenning next month in the USA. The line read “Change to engage pissed off customers”.

What I great idea!

In my experience there are normally more happy customers than unhappy, and in the case where you have a grumpy customer who has a forum to vent you may just find that your champions are ready and armed to defend you and your product/service.

This I believe is one of the few places I believe a business blog is appropriate.

Ummmm… I’m sure I said ‘digg no more’

Posted on February 16th, 2006 in Blogging, Web by Jay

How bizarre…  Scanning my site stats to see where people are coming from and what do I find?  Referrals from digg.com, so I follow the link to a story on digg.com about me giving up on digg.com.

But hey!  I got digged!  How cool!  (or did i get dugg?)

To be honest, this is nothing more than an interesting irony.  It doesn’t change my mind, I am still not going back.

We should have seen this coming

Seems to me to make sense that comments from the last couple of days all kinda work together.

Firstly, Yahoo! happy to be second in the search game.

Secondly, Yahoo! already buying up other social software.

And now this!  Yahoo! want to buy digg.  If it’s real that it.

Put yourself in digg’s shoes just for a second… You built a great tool, people love, it becomes a bit of a pain to run sometimes because you need to spend so much time managing infrastructure and then Yahoo! walks up and offers $30 mil?

If I was digg, i would take the money and start the next best thing, then wait for Yahoo! to want that as well.

Let’s Start Over

OK, so I don’t know how many times I have loaded up some CMS software in an attempt to make it a blog and useful site at the same time.  Finally read a review about WordPress, and thanks to the author for a great summary, so made the decision and will stick to it this time.
